NACE PhD Scholarships

Under the Training and Innovation Pillar, the NACE are fostering the next generation of allergy researchers.
NACE support for PhD students is for scholarship stipend combined with training through NACE/CFAR training days, opportunities to strengthen their PhD projects and presentation skills through NACE leadership including stream co-chair feedback as needed, Consumer Advisory Group input, Stream and NextGen (early career research network) opportunities and the opportunity to access travel grants to present PhD project outcomes to conferences and workshops.
The NACE are offering PhD scholarships to applicants to complete a high impact PhD project developed by a NACE Pillar and/or Project Lead that addresses a critical knowledge gap in allergy research, and that are aligned to and leverage existing NACE projects.
PhD projects available:
1. Beyond Penicillin Allergy - The National Scaling of Antibiotic Allergy Delabelling in Health Care

Many people are told they are allergic to antibiotics when they are not. Incorrect allergy labels often prevent people from receiving the best antibiotics and can lead to complications, including longer hospital stays, more side effects and antibiotic resistance. Australia has already shown that testing low-risk penicillin allergy labels is safe and effective. This project will expand this approach to other commonly reported antibiotic allergies, including cephalosporins and sulfonamides, improving access to first-line antibiotics for people who need them most, including those who are immunocompromised. This research will help make antibiotic allergy testing a routine part of healthcare across Australia.

2. ADAPT Anywhere Advancing Access and Equity in Infant Peanut Oral Immunotherapy
Peanut oral immunotherapy is a new treatment that can help children outgrow their allergy, but the current program (ADAPT) requires many hospital visits, which is hard for families who live far away, work or have caring commitments. This PhD will test a “virtual” ADAPT model, supporting families to do dosing at home instead of in hospital. We will explore why some families don’t start or finish treatment, work with parents and consumers to develop practical resources like an app, and trial the virtual approach at three children's hospitals- aiming to make treatment safer, easier and fairer to access for Australian children, wherever they live.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to apply for a NACE PhD scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Graduates with minimum Honours degree - or equivalent - in the fields of molecular, biological and medical sciences, population health and statistics, data linkage, health economics and health care policy OR
- Healthcare professionals, including - but not limited to - allergy/immunology or respiratory trainees/fellows, general paediatricians, dietitians, pharmacists, nurses and other allied health professionals
- Successful completion of Honours or Master by PhD start date
- Be eligible to enrol in a PhD program at the proposed host institution
- Be an Australian citizen, or hold an eligible Australian residency status
- Driven to be part of Australia’s next generation of allergy researchers
